"Anyone can make it!" is the American dream, which has long since become a global one. In his epochal novel "The Grapes of Wrath", however, John Steinbeck places the deconstruction of this myth at the centre of his narrative. A farming family is forced to abandon their home after years of drought and growing economic pressure. With an unshakeable belief in a golden future, they head west, where the economy is booming and there is supposedly good work for everyone. There, the refugees are seen not just as "a burden, but as an opportunity" - but an opportunity for whom? The American dream of hope is revealed to be a clever marketing strategy that promotes exploitation and individualisation, while the faceless banks and super-rich accumulate more and more wealth - and break up communities. In this production of "The Grapes of Wrath", the microcosm of the family is used to illustrate the destructive power of capitalism in our relationships and what can perhaps be done to counter this power.
